Wills don’t have to be ‘the final rip off’
Last week’s Panorama program on Wills has caused a huge amount of anxiety because of the questions it raised over the validity of some wills. We are pleased to be able to reassure our clients that the providers that we recommend are all accredited by the institute of professional will writers.
We have long been championing the use of an accredited solicitor over a supermarket or a DIY kit for writing the most important document you will ever write. It seems ludicrous that so many people have been miss sold wills that aren’t worth the paper they are written on and for that reason, we are pleased that Panorama aired the program ‘Wills – the final rip off’. However, what the program failed to do was to tell Contractors and Permies alike how to ensure that your Will is written by a trustworthy professional.
A will can be a difficult subject to talk about but it is vital that Contractors ensure they have one in place and that it is accurate, up to date and planned correctly to ensure that your assets are shared fairly and according to your wishes. Without a will, you run the risk of your assets, your home and even your children falling into the hands of the state so it is arguably the most important document you will ever write.
We are currently working alongside Simply Legal and Associates who are accredited will writers that are members of regulatory bodies including the institute of professional will writers. We asked our contact Paul Cordle for his thoughts on the Panorama program. He said “It is to no one’s benefit but to insist on the highest standards of competence and workmanship and you, and others, may have every confidence in APS, its technical competence and business integrity. Were this not the case I would not be a member of the joint venture team”.
Whilst there are cheaper options out there, these may prove far more costly in the long run because your family will have to pay to fix the problems that you leave behind. Inheritance tax can be extremely costly but with a carefully planned will you can often minimise your families inheritance tax liability. We urge Contractors to consider the old adage of ‘cheapest doesn’t equal best’ when it comes to will writing. This is one area where saving money by shopping for a will on the high street or worse still, at the supermarket certainly doesn’t pay.
We are proud to recommend a will writer that we can trust to offer the same level of service to our clients that we would offer ourselves. In fact, we are so convinced by the service that they provide that we are even using them to write our own wills.
